Band interview

Double page spread band interview

So we're here with what the Sun calls "The hottest new indie prospect in the U.K." Only 2 years ago The Unknown were doing gigs in small pubs in town centres and back alley clubs and now they play to upwards of 1000 people a time and they only hit the big time a few months ago. We sent our very own Dan Jones to catch up with them in London, where they were promoting their new album and this is what they had to say.

So tell us a bit about yourselves?

Harry:” I’m 22, grew up in Nottingham and now live in London. I’m the bassist of the band and have been playing since I was in primary school and joined the band in 2011.”

Karl:” I’m 24, I was born in Scotland but moved down to Manchester when I was 9 years old, I also now live in London, I’m the drummer and backing vocalist of the band. I’ve been playing the drums since I was 14.”

Chuck:” I’m 23, I was born in Texas and have just moved to Britain. I’m  the lead guitarist and vocalist of the band. Me and Karl started the band 3 years ago. We met at university at just had a few jam sessions and we just clicked almost instantly, our different styles of playing complements each other.”

These last few years have been great?

Chuck:” yeah, it’s been a real whirlwind; I know it’s a cliché but it’s been like a dream. When we first set out as a band we never expected to be this successful.

The Sun has called the band “The hottest new indie prospect in the U.K” would you agree?

Harry:” Well without sounding big headed I think we would agree, with all the praise and expectation you suddenly realise that you might actually be quite good.

What inspired you to write the songs you have?

Karl: “We took inspiration from the things we see around us every day and the things we see that interest us in some way or another.”

Chuck: “Yeah, for the new single it was different though we just sat down together made a few beats and melodies chopped and changed a few until we were happy with one then we began to think of the lyrics and it just all fell into place quite easily to be honest.”

This next question was sent in by Sarah a massive fan of yours. “What would you all be if you weren’t in the band?”

Harry: “Good question Sarah but I really wanted to be a professional footballer but if I didn’t make it then I probably would have been like a coach or something.”

Karl: “I would have been in the police force probably that’s what I always wanted to do but then I discovered music.”

Chuck: “I really wanted to be a baseball player when I was a kid I then moved on to basketball but when I started playing the guitar that was it.”
